West Chester man is using health scares to change his life and help others

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — Exercising and staying healthy is sometimes easier said than done. For a West Chester man, his doctor gave him bad news a few years ago and he made his health a priority.

“I figured that instead of trying to find a gym that I can fit into, how about I just get my own and get other people who can relate to my story to it. So here we are,” explains Uriel Baker, owner of West Chester Fit Body Boot Camp.

Baker’s gym opened on Monday and he’s already coaching clients and changing lives.

“I don’t think I’m here to change the world, but if the world is West Chester and Cincinnati then I will do whatever I can with the team that is here as long as the members are willing get the job done,” he adds Baker.

Baker’s story of getting fit began a few years ago.

“I wanted to chase after my then 3-year-old and I just felt really out of breath, and I didn’t feel like I should feel like this for a short little kid chase,” recalls Baker. “So I went to an investigation and that’s when I got the bad news. And it was one bad thing after another.”

The doctor mentioned diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and more.

Baker didn’t want to take medication and had other ideas for getting well.

“I made a deal with my doctor that gives me a few months,” Baker continues, “I’m going to go home and try to address this with diet and exercise. At the time he thought I was crazy.”

Baker committed to a healthier lifestyle and his doctor was surprised when he came back with a clean bill of health a few months later.

That’s when Baker decided if he can change his life, maybe he can inspire others to do the same.

He started researching gyms and became a franchise owner. Then he found the Fit Body Boot Camp.

The gym holds 30-minute sessions focused on weight loss and body toning for members.

Head trainer Melissa Starks says it’s more than a gym.

“It’s really about having a place where the community can come together, exercise, enjoy themselves, have fun, lose weight, get in shape and get healthy,” says Starks.

Baker says it’s important to prioritize your health now.

“Don’t wait until you realize you have to do it,” says Baker. “Do it because you want to.”
