Urolithin Research Opens Door to Osteoarthritis Relief

Urolithin A supplementation may improve mitochondrial health and reduce joint cartilage damage, a new study shows.

The research team published preclinical results from a new study in aging cellwho reported the joint health benefits of the postbiotic gut microbiome urolithin A. They noted that for the first time a compound — Amazentis’ proprietary urolithin A supplement Mitopure — has been shown to improve mitochondrial health in an experimental model of osteoarthritis (OA). The results showed significantly improved mitochondrial health in human cartilage cells harvested from both healthy and osteoarthritic knee joints. Supplementation with Mitopure for eight weeks protected against progression of osteoarthritis disease in the experimental model.

So how does Mitopure work?

The answer lies within our mitochondria, living power generators in our cells that convert chemical energy into energy our cells can actually use to grow and repair, as well as all of the biological functions that are part of life. During this process, called cellular respiration, the mitochondria convert glucose and oxygen into an energy-rich molecule called ATP.

What did the study show?

In research, Mitopure demonstrated two important beneficial effects on cartilage cells in both healthy donors and those suffering from osteoarthritis:

  • It significantly induced mitophagy – the recycling of aged and damaged mitochondria.
  • It significantly increased the activity of the mitochondria, which resulted in more energy being produced.

The second part of the study focused on the effect of two months of Mitopure supplementation on a model that mimics the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

  • Mitopure reduced the breakdown of joint tissue.
  • Mitopure supplementation reduced osteoarthritis-associated leg pain.
  • It exerted a mild anti-inflammatory effect in the model.
  • Better joint health after administration of Mitopure was associated with significantly improved mitochondrial health, including higher rates of mitophagy and increased regeneration of new, functional mitochondria.
