It has been well over two years since the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic and we are all understandably so exhausted and so far beyond it that many have dropped their guard or are desensitized to the seriousness of the situation. But COVID continues to spread around the world and many countries are experiencing surges right now, including the United States where we have seen a large spike in cases. Why are so many people getting COVID right now? dr Tomi Mitchell, a Board-Certified General Practitioner with Holistic wellness strategies shares some ways people are now catching the virus and reminds people to avoid behaviors that may put you at greater risk. “The COVID pandemic is far from over. The latest virus variant is contributing to a spike in cases in many parts of the world. This new variant is more contagious than the original and spreads quickly. In addition, this variant is more resistant to the currently available vaccines. Honestly, this is frustrating as it might seem that we are losing ground in relation to the COVID pandemic. dr Mitchell tells us, “Given the highly contagious nature of COVID-19, everyone must take precautions to protect themselves and others. One of the most important things we can do is wear a mask in public places. Mask (especially well-fitting , N95 masks) – wearing it effectively reduces the spread of the virus and is therefore one of the main recommendations of the health authorities. Despite this, I have heard of many cases where people wearing a mask are still have been infected with COVID -19. In most of these cases, the person was in a public place where most people were not wearing masks. This underscores the importance of wearing masks: even if you take all necessary precautions, you are still at risk if you are around you are not. Therefore, we must all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a mask when we leave our homes.”
dr Mitchell emphasizes: “Washing hands is an essential part of preventing the spread of disease. By washing your hands, you remove dirt, bacteria, and viruses that can cause illness. Washing hands is necessary when you are around people who are sick, when you are preparing food and after using the toilet. Washing your hands regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19. The virus that causes COVID-19 can spread from person to person through contact with respiratory secretions such as saliva or mucus. You can also get infected by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to remove the virus from your hands and prevent it from spreading to others. You should also avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth to reduce the risk of infection.”
“Most people are familiar with the general recommendation to keep a distance of two meters from others to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” says Dr. mitchell However, Research has revealed that the virus can be spread by small aerosol particles, meaning the six-foot rule may not suffice. The further away you can be from others, the better. This is especially important in confined spaces with limited ventilation. Unfortunately, in many workplaces, on public transport and other crowded areas, it is not always possible to maintain a safe distance from others. However, it is important to do so whenever possible to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.”
dr Mitchell explains, “It’s important to remember that everyone has different tolerances for risk. A manageable risk for one person can be deadly for another. We all need to respect each other’s choices about the level of risk they are willing to take. “It’s also important to be informed about the risks of any given situation. With the current pandemic, there are many unknowns and it can be difficult to make an informed decision. However, there are some things we do know. For example, we know that the virus is primarily spread through respiratory droplets, so activities that involve close contact or sharing breathing space are more likely to result in transmission We also know that people with pre-existing medical conditions are at a higher risk of developing serious illnesses when they contract the virus.Based on this information, we can make informed decisions about which activities we would like to engage in and which ones we would rather avoid. dr Mitchell explains, “There are many reasons why people lose their guard when it comes to their health. For example, they might abandon their health routines or they might not take necessary precautions when around others. In this case, there may be an increased risk of COVID-19. COVID is a serious respiratory disease that can cause serious symptoms, including pneumonia and death. Therefore, everyone must take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from COVID. This includes washing your hands frequently, avoiding close contact with sick people and wearing a face mask around others. When you are sick, staying home and away from others is important to prevent the spread of the disease. You can protect yourself and others from COVID with these simple measures.”

An office environment often has cramped spaces, making it easier for the virus to spread from person to person.
People tend to touch joint surfaces such as doorknobs, elevator buttons, and photocopiers throughout the day, which is another route of infection.
Office workers often take breaks together or have lunch nearby, further increasing the likelihood of transmission.
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent the spread of COVID 19 in the workplace, there are some steps employers can take to reduce the risk. These include ensuring adequate ventilation, providing alcohol-based hand sanitizer and tissues, and asking employees to stay home if they are sick. By taking these precautions, employers can help create a safer work environment for their employees.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following underlying health conditions put people at increased risk for serious illness from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19):
Chronic kidney disease
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Heart diseases such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
Immunosuppressed condition (weakened immune system) due to solid organ transplantation
Obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 30 or higher)
Sickle cell anemia
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
People with these underlying health conditions may be at increased risk for more serious complications from COVID-19. This list is not all-inclusive. Other underlying health conditions can put people at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19. CDC will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID-19.
