I have tried these 3 supplements and they have made a world of difference to my health – eat this, not that

I’ve never been one to take supplements. They always seemed pretty pointless to me, and I often didn’t want to spend the money on them when I could buy delicious food with them. And certain supplements still make me feel that way. But over the past few years I’ve tried three different supplements that have actually made a huge difference in my health.

I will admit that while these supplements added helpful and necessary nutrients to my daily routine, I think the main reason they made such a massive difference in my health was because they helped me focus more on my overall diet and diet Focusing on the types of nutrients (or lack of nutrients) I was getting into my body through the foods I ate. In a way, they’ve helped me refocus on what’s important in my diet.

I took a probiotic supplement

In 2018 I was struggling with persistent stomach problems. After seeing a doctor about it, they concluded that many of my symptoms sounded like “leaky gut.” Leaky gut, which cannot be tested for at all, can happen when your gut barrier weakens over time, allowing more toxins to enter your body.

Curing leaky gut is possible, it just takes a few changes to your diet to rebuild that gut barrier. My doctor suggested improving my gut health this way by increasing my intake of probiotics AND prebiotics.

Prebiotics are fiber that helps the healthy bacteria in your gut grow, while probiotics are actually live bacteria that can contribute to the existing bacteria in your gut microbiome. Together, these two are known to help repair and restore your gut health, so I definitely wanted to give it a try.

Foods rich in prebiotics are easy to obtain and can be found in plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, probiotics are found in more fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha — things I don’t typically eat much of in my daily diet. I wanted to make sure I could get enough of both prebiotics and probiotics, so I opted to eat prebiotic-rich foods and supplement probiotics with a pill instead.

The combination of regularly taking a probiotic supplement while focusing more on consuming prebiotics and maintaining a nutrient dense, balanced diet healed my gut issues much faster than I could have imagined. I started using protein powder

Like many people, I struggle to get enough protein in my diet throughout the day. Before I started watching how much protein I was eating, I was sluggish and hungry all the time. I had tons of cravings and didn’t feel satisfied after many meals I ate.

After learning that I wasn’t getting enough protein, I decided to include more high-protein foods in as many meals as possible. While this definitely helped, I still struggled to hit my protein goals, especially during phases of life when I was more active or on the go.

Adding some protein by using a protein powder was really game-changing for me. This gave me something to throw in a smoothie or my yogurt bowl in the morning so I could still get a protein boost on even my busiest days. However, as with most supplements, I needed to make sure this wasn’t the only time during the day that I was focusing on my protein levels.

My protein powder never replaces the protein I get from balanced meals throughout the day – it only gives me a boost when I need one. There are so many protein powders on the market with their own unique benefits, but I really like this plant-based powder:

I learned more about Lion’s Mane

The use of mushrooms as a dietary supplement is still a hotly debated topic in the medical world. Some people are convinced of the potential benefits of these mushrooms, while others are bluffing. But in my experience with Lion’s Mane (one of the more common mushroom supplements) I’ve seen some significant changes.

Lion’s Mane contains two compounds, Erinacin and Hericenone, which have been shown to support brain cell growth. Because of this, research continues into the effects of Lion’s Mane on older adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

These mushroom compounds are also known to help with things like brain fog, memory, and mild symptoms of anxiety and depression. I first tried Lion’s Mane capsules in 2020 and after taking them consistently for about four months I really felt a tremendous difference in my brain fog and information retention. However, I haven’t felt any real changes in the symptoms of anxiety or depression.

It’s hard to tell if it was the lion’s mane that helped with my brain fog, or if the supplements acted more as a motivator to pay attention to areas of my diet that might be contributing. Consistently taking Lion’s Mane gave me more motivation to take care of my cognitive health and make changes where I could, like trying to eat less added sugar or limiting my alcohol consumption during the work week.

Overall, these supplements have made a massive difference to my health and I’m glad I tried them. It may be worth investigating if you’re having similar issues, but it’s always important to check with your doctor before adding any supplements to your diet!
