“It’s important that as soon as we hit 50 that we start to think seriously and prioritize our health, body and well-being. on our attitude. When we internalize this fact, then our approach just changes organically and we then need to take up the health relationship steps that we follow religiously once we reach 50,” says Nidhi Nahata, Nutritional Therapist and Founder of Justbe Resto Cafe Bangalore.
Nahata suggests four steps to healthy aging after 50:
Step 1: Establish our body’s relationship with food
This means paying attention to what we eat and eating foods that will love us instead of causing us ailments and illnesses.
A basic rule of thumb is “eat whole grains” and natural foods like:
⁃ Beans, which help maintain the longevity of our organs,
⁃ sprouts that help build immunity,
⁃ Gluten-free grains such as amaranth, oats, millet, etc., which help with digestion,
⁃ Fruits to increase energy levels and provide lots of fiber to our body,
⁃ Salads, which are also a high-fiber food that helps relieve constipation.
Step 2: Eliminate
Meat activates cancer cells (carcinogens) and must be avoided, while refined products such as maida, oil and sugar should be eliminated from your diet.
Step 3: Embrace elements of nature
– Sun is also an essential part of our diet. It is food for our skin that helps build vitamin D3,
– Water: Adequate beverages and water-rich foods such as watermelons, oranges, etc. also keep us hydrated.
– Walk: Walking gets the feet moving, the blood flows, the mind is activated and movement is life.
Step 4: The attitude counts
Being aware of our choices means self-love, which means self-care. This is the most important lesson of love – because before we love someone, we must learn to love ourselves, our body, our attitude, and then love will flow effortlessly and without any judgement.
