Welcome to 24/7 beauty, Marie Claire‘s weekly look into the daily lives of some of the most disruptive women in their industries. Have you ever wondered how they do it all in one day? Here is your answer.
When the pandemic struck, Norma Kamali thought, “I’ve been in business for over 50 years. Is this how it ends for me?” Instead, both her clothing line and lifestyle brand grew exponentially, a result of clever realignment and hard work. The designer continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, providing a modern twist on everything from bridal wear and swimsuits (worn by Jennifer Lopez) to green tea complements and furniture.
“Luxury is healthy and beautiful because you’re healthy,” says Kamali, which should tell you everything you need to know about her approach to self-care. Here, the fashion powerhouse talks us through her daily beauty routine as well as the non-negotiable wellness practice her (hint: it’s about a a lot of of green juice).
Rise and shine
I get up very early. Between 4:30 and 5:30 am I love the mornings – a lot. It’s really important to me. I like the stillness of the morning. I brush my teeth and I use a dental soap (opens in new tab) this pulls bacteria out of your system and I use a mouthwash (opens in new tab) which alkalizes your body. Those are two things I really like and they’re really easy for me to use. The day starts with how I take care of myself.
My beauty routine is really simple. I have a cleanser that I use that is part of my line and I use glow– I don’t use face makeup, so Glow is a product I made that is a combination of a moisturizer and something similar to how a tanning product develops in your skin, except it’s made with beet and caramel . When I use makeup, it might be a brow brush or eyebrow mascara and eyelash mascara, but that’s about it. And I use a Lipstain from [Pera] This is made from cherries and berries, so it’s a condiment that’s really pretty, tastes good, and is healthy. This is my “get ready for work” routine. Very fast, easy, not complicated.
I’m the kind of person who makes the bed. I do a morning meditation, which is a kind of active meditation, it’s like an exaggerated cat-cow breathing, like a meditative breath. I do that 100 times, I’m really warmed up. That’s before I shower and everything, then I turn on the shower, I make my bed, I feed the dog. I do all these things so that when I’m done, I’ll walk out the door.
I don’t usually eat breakfast because I’m fasting (fasting ends at either 10am or noon depending on when I finished eating the night before), but I do drink green tea. We have a great green tea that we sell that I found from Japan years ago that is exceptional. I also drink green juices every day, maybe one in the morning, one in the afternoon. I have a local restaurant that makes fresh juice but I use it too Green vibrancy (opens in new tab)this is a very old fashioned green powder but it is amazing for boosting immunity.
I used to wear tons of makeup, but the more confident I felt, the more confident I felt, the more confident I was in showing my face. i created this line because I wanted it to be something that people can use, where they can show their skin, but complemented by the product and what it’s doing to bring out the natural face that they have, the natural beauty that each of us has has to improve.
I’m obsessed-obsessed-with “Tom’s Diner” by the German bands AnnenMayKantereit and Giant Rooks. When I was trolling something on social media, all of a sudden this music came on and I was like: What is that? What the hell is that? and this music was fantastic for me. Now I’m firmly rooted and I want to know everything about this band and everything else around them. In Germany there are probably – as far as I know – maybe five bands that are as interesting, fresh, very young, exciting as the music from England when I was there in the 60s. I was rooted in music at the time and in the excitement of hearing incredible sounds. I’d actually like to do the whole interview about it… I play the song for Uber drivers, everything. I’m obsessed.
I’m 76. I have no choice not to exercise. I to have to work out. And I like it because it makes me feel better. i feel strong I hate it sometimes when I’m doing it, but when I’m done I’m really happy. I train in the afternoons, usually towards the end of the day because I start so early, and I can do anything from yoga to Physique 57, which is something like Pilates on crack or barre on crack, it’s really intense, but that’s the way it is really, really good. I do something called Gyrokinesis and I like to try many different courses. I’m part of Equinox, so I take every class just to try different things. Sometimes I do two classes in a weekend, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and as the weather improves I spend more time swimming and just getting out.
Acupuncture facelifts are something I’ve been doing for a very long time. If you do acupuncture weekly, the accumulation is really remarkable. I use some too snail slime creams (opens in new tab) and i do cupping in the face (opens in new tab), and sometimes I’m super successful, and it’s like the gaps are smoothing out. Every once in a while I leave that little cupping thing on for too long and end up with hickeys on my face, which isn’t good.
When I wash my hair, it’s usually in the morning. I try not to wash it every day but I work out every day so I either have to rinse it or wash it and I use an amazing one shampoo and conditioner and hair mask which I love so much that I started wearing them to the Wellness Café. I especially love the mask because I just rinse my hair out or wash my hair and I put the mask in and let my hair dry. I never use a hair dryer unless I have to. I have an amazing hair growth spray and I have seen a huge change in the texture of my hair from using it. You have one too Eyelash and eyebrow growth stick these are very good. i am very loyal
I created it myself and it’s called The smell. It’s not so much about other people smelling you as it is about making you feel calm and relaxed and refreshed like you’re floating on a cloud. It has top notes, it has eucalyptus, camphor, lavender, geranium, then it goes down to patchouli and lots of warm, kinda sexier notes down there. I spray it on my pillow at night. I spray it when I need to calm down on a crazy day. I think fragrances that have an impact on how you feel are really the most modern fragrances compared to fragrances that just convey an image of you.
When I was younger – I think like everyone – whoever the actresses or models were at the time, that’s how you wore makeup. And I was very experimental; I shaved my eyebrows in front of everyone and did all these really beautiful things to my face. But once I started thinking about what’s beautiful to me in a more natural way, all I had to do was look at myself in the mirror, which is hard because we tend to see everything we don’t like first. For years I had all these images of things I had to do to correct my face, but finally I looked at myself and I thought, This is me and no one else looks like me so I’m just going to look at myself from a health perspective and try to make sure my skin is glowing, my eyes are sparkling and my aura is radiant with strength and health.
Probably something in engineering. When I graduated from FIT I wanted to travel and I had no idea where or why and got a job with an airline in the office in the 60’s. I was working on a UNIVAC computer and I could know what was happening on the plane, what was happening to the plane, how many people were on the plane, who they were, where they were going.
And then, in the 90’s, when I realized I could have my own website, I did it – of course nobody looked because nobody else was on the internet, but I was there. And I love VR very much. A few years ago, a friend of mine and I had a parallel universe, metaverse-like experience with this thing called high society. It just changed everything for me in terms of how I would look to the future. I’m not afraid of it – a lot of people are afraid of it, but I’m very happy about it.
It’s simple: cleanse, moisturize and think about sleep. Sleep, diet and exercise are the most important anchors of a healthy lifestyle, so sleep is crucial to beauty. I take great care of my bedroom, so I make my bed in the morning. The bedroom has to be really cold, it has to smell good, the sheets have to be good – some are expensive, but mostly my sheets aren’t, they just feel good and they smell good. The bed is super comfortable and sometimes I think Oh man, I’d like to be in my bed, because it’s a great place. Even having a silk pillowcase—those little things you do for yourself that are a sign of self-love are really important because people notice how you feel about yourself and it helps cement that self-love. If you don’t take care of yourself, people will notice too. I think the sleep ritual is one of those things that anyone can do and it doesn’t cost a lot of money. You get your phone and gadgets out of your bedroom and really get serious about the sleep part of your life.
I definitely meditate at night, and it’s not a long meditation. I find a spot in my house that I like and just stop there. Just sitting here suddenly takes me to a different place. I feel like the day just washes away. Then I could read something. I try not to answer my phone too much because it gets me going before bed.
Very early. I’m embarrassed to tell you – I can’t say it out loud.
