Cancer: Citrus fruits may prevent your cells from becoming ‘cancerous’ – expert

Triggered by uncontrollable cell growth, cancer can develop almost anywhere in the body. Although in some cases you may not be able to change your risk, a healthy diet has been shown to be an effective way of reducing the likelihood of the condition. Express.co.uk spoke to Medicine Direct Superintendent Pharmacist Hussain Abdeh about the summer treatment that could lower your risk of four types of cancer.

Spicy yet refreshing citrus fruits provide just the right amount of flavor and coolness during the summer months.

However, research also suggests that the acidic snacks might also help ward off cancer.

Mr Abdeh said: “The antioxidants found in citrus fruits can scavenge and neutralize free radicals in the body, which has a neutralizing effect on them.

“This helps prevent them from damaging the body’s healthy cells, making them less susceptible to cancer.”

Another powerful part hidden in the colorful fruits is their high soluble fiber content.

The expert said: “Citrus fruits also have a higher proportion of soluble to insoluble fiber compared to most other fruits and vegetables.

“This can help aid in digestion and reduce inflammation in the body.”

According to Science Direct, inflammation is considered a driver for cancer and at the same time promotes tumor growth.

As there are a variety of colors and flavors to choose from, Mr. Abdeh also explained what is important when it comes to citrus.

He said: “Oranges are one of the best citrus fruits for a wide range of antioxidants and nutrients, including vitamin C.

“Lemons, limes, and grapefruits are also high in phytonutrients, which are types of antioxidants that may help protect the body from cell damage and other problems.”

In addition, research suggests that citrus fruits may play a role in preventing various types of cancer, including colon, prostate, pancreas and breast cancer.

However, the expert noted that the research on this is “inconclusive”.

For example, a study published in the journal Medicine found that eating citrus fruits could “significantly” reduce the risk of cancer, which forms in the thin, flat cells that line the inside of the esophagus.

However, the same benefit has not been seen in cancers that start in the cells of the mucus-secreting glands in the muscle tube.

Another study, published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology, also highlighted the role of citrus juice as a “potential anti-cancer resource” after looking at 22 research papers.

More research is currently needed to draw a firm conclusion about citrus fruits and various cancers.

It’s also important not to overdo it with the refreshing snacks. Mr Abdeh said: “You should eat citrus fruits as part of a balanced diet as overeating can lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain.

“Try to eat one or two pieces a day as part of your five a day.

“It’s always best to eat the whole fruit, as fruit juice can lose a lot of its natural goodness, especially when it’s been concentrated.”

The expert concluded that eating a variety of healthy foods, getting enough exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are also important to reduce the risk of the dreaded disease.
