Southeastern Grocers Inc. (SEG), parent company of renowned brands such as Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, recently announced the launch of its Break from Hunger food program for at-risk children through the SEG Gives Foundation.
Through this initiative, designed to ensure no child goes hungry, healthy and accessible nutritional options are provided, while the organization Feeding America receives 1 million meals to provide immediate care to those most in need.
The food company said customers and employees — ages 17 and under — can purchase a “Student Summer Lunch Pack” for just $2 at any of its brand locations through Labor Day.
“The challenges our communities have faced in recent years have added to the struggle of many families to feed their children during the summer months. Through our Break from Hunger program and our continued partnership with Feeding America, we aim to provide children with the nutritious foods they need to live healthy lives. We want to do everything we can to put food on the tables of our neighbors who need a helping hand now more than ever,” said Raymond Rhee, Southeastern Grocers chief people officer.
According to data from Feeding America, 1 in 6 children in the United States can be food insecure, which is why they emphasize the importance of addressing this critical situation before they return to school, as “inadequate nutrition hampers growth and development of a child and can negatively impact their ability to succeed in academic and social settings,” it stresses.
SEG has also noted that the five states in which it operates — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi — rank among the 20 highest rates of child poverty in the country.
“By offering affordable Student Summer Lunch Packs through the Break from Hunger program, SEG can expand its support to fight hunger in the Southeast and provide assistance to customers at a time when it is most needed. The nutritious meal boxes contain either a ham or turkey sandwich, fries, a piece of fresh fruit and a bottle of water. Customers can simply request a “Student Summer Lunch Box” from the deli at any local Fresco y Más, Harvey’s Supermarket or Winn Dixie store. The SEG Gives Foundation will also donate $1 to Feeding America for every purchase of a Break from Hunger meal, with the goal of working with food banks in the Feeding America network to donate the equivalent of one million meals to the community ‘ emphasized SEG.
In addition, SEG and the SEG Gives Foundation recently announced a $140,000 donation to seven Feeding America network food banks in the Southeast to help directly fund hunger relief initiatives. This is in addition to the $700,000 allocated to local communities to alleviate food insecurity last year.
Southeastern Grocers Inc. is one of the largest conventional supermarket companies in the United States. SEG grocery stores, liquor stores and on-site pharmacies serve communities in all five southeastern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The SEG Gives Foundation is the charitable arm of Southeastern Grocers Inc. that directs donations to causes of the highest priority to the communities SEG serves, including fighting hunger, supporting military members and their families, providing relief for those affected by extreme weather and natural disasters and advocating belonging, inclusion and diversity by fighting social injustice to close the inequality gaps faced by many individuals, families and communities.
Feeding America is the largest hunger relief organization in the United States. Through a network of more than 200 food banks, 21 state food bank associations and more than 60,000 partner agencies, pantries and meal programs, it helped provide 6.6 billion meals to tens of millions in need in 2021 alone.
