The campaign provides educational resources about liver cancer and encourages people to make some daily adjustments to support liver health

NUTLEY, NJ, August 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Baseball legend and Latin Grammy-nominated musician Bernie Williams has partnered with Blue Faery, the Global Liver Institute and Eisai Inc. to start this A liver to love Initiative to raise awareness of liver cancer and the importance of a healthy lifestyle to support liver health. The campaign aims to provide information, educational resources, advocacy support services and a sense of community for all affected by liver cancer.

Rates of liver cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma (the most common form of liver cancer), have nearly tripled since 1980. It is estimated that over 40,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2022. Many people living with liver cancer may also have other liver-related conditions, such as chronic liver disease, viral hepatitis (B or C), fatty liver, or cirrhosis. When treating liver cancer, it’s important to take an active role in managing liver health and talking to your doctor.

“Liver disease is personal to me. My mother, uncle and grandfather are affected and I’ve seen firsthand the difficulties and feelings that come with it,” Williams said. “Liver disease and liver cancer can disproportionately affect communities of color, so I’m happy to be fighting for it A liver to love Initiative to encourage others to be proactive about liver health and to help those affected by liver cancer feel seen and supported.”

Liver cancer is a complex disease that is often misunderstood. Once diagnosed, people with liver cancer can feel stigmatized, lost, and alone. This initiative aims to support all people living with liver cancer throughout their experience. It emphasizes the importance of making small adjustments to daily routines based on four pillars of liver health — diet, exercise, sleep, and mental health — along with support from our own health team and the liver cancer community.

“Dealing with liver cancer can be challenging. Being proactive when it comes to liver health is important for physical, mental and emotional well-being,” he said Andrea Wilson Woods, President, Blue Faery. “That’s why it’s especially important to reach this community with resources to explore treatment options and determine the diet, exercise and lifestyle that will work best for each individual.”

The website provides information about liver cancer, the roles of different healthcare providers, a patient may have on their multidisciplinary care team, and what to expect when diagnosed with liver cancer. In addition, the site provides links to advocacy groups and other organizations dedicated to helping cancer patients and their caregivers.

“The people who understand liver cancer most are those who live it every day: the patients, caregivers, families, health teams and liver cancer support organizations — and while it can be difficult to ask for and receive support, it is we are stronger when we come together as a community,” said Donna Schreier, President and CEO, Global Liver Institute. “Whether you or a loved one is living with liver cancer, we can all join together to usher in a new era of understanding and support.”

“Eisai is driven by us human healthcare Mission to put our first thoughts on patients and their families and we believe everyone deserves quality care. From our work with patients and advocates, we know that stigma can make some people with liver cancer feel discouraged or uncomfortable about seeking medical care – be it external or internalized against themselves, so we are addressing this and the many challenges that this community is facing. We have worked with partners who share our vision,” said Teresa CroninVice President of Corporate Communications and Patient Advocacy at Eisai Inc. “We hope that A liver to love will help everyone affected by liver cancer regain their strength by learning more about this disease, finding community support and making healthy choices.”

As part of the initiative, Williams is joining the online conversation about liver health and liver cancer.
