Here are today’s top 5 stories at Oceanside Camp Pendleton:
Local runner and founder of O’side Turkey Trot, Kathy Kinane, really wants people to get their feet moving. Kinane created the Oceanside Trotters in Training to create a casual atmosphere where running is introduced to improve mental and physical health, socialize and learn how to run a 5k race . Each workout consists of making your way down the city’s relatively flat streets to the Harbor or The Strand, both offering the views and sunsets from nearby beaches. The group is free and meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the fountain in the Oceanside Civic Center. The group consists of runners, walkers and joggers and everyone is welcome. The Oceanside Fire Department dedicated its new four-story training tower last week thanks to funding from Measure X. The tower will help firefighters practice skills needed to protect the six- to seven-story buildings in downtown Oceanside, department officials said. The building includes three isolated combustion chambers of various sizes and configurations on the first and second floors, where firefighters can deal with a real fire of up to 2,000 degrees. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Locally elected officials and community leaders honored longtime political and equal leader Leon L. Williams with special awards on Saturday to celebrate his 100th birthday. Williams received a Life Achievement Award from the county. Williams was elected San Diego’s first black city councilman in 1969 and first black borough leader in 1982. (Press Release Desk)
“Purple Hearts,” a Netflix Original movie released Friday, was partially filmed at Camp Pendleton and other locations around Oceanside and around California. The 122-minute film tells the story of Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow, opposites mated in a marriage of convenience. “But when tragedy strikes,” asserts the IMDb promotional copy, “the line between real and fake begins to blur.” (Stars and Stripes)
The average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline in San Diego County fell for the 49th straight day on Wednesday since rising to a record 1.7 cents at $5.537, its lowest since March 8. The median price is down 83.6 cents since rising to a record $6,373 on June 15, including Tuesday’s 1.4 cents, according to figures from AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
